Mission Statement

The Butler County Public Library strives to enhance the quality of life for residents by serving their information, leisure, and lifelong learning needs.


Butler County Public Library has served the citizens of Butler County since 1954. The library has one main location as well as an active bookmobile delivery system, the library has as its mission to enhance the quality of life to residents by serving their information, leisure and lifelong learning needs.

The library became a Taxing District in 1967. The building we now use today opened in 1969. The building is 5,728 square feet with 690 square feet belonging to the meeting room. Patrons with library accounts have access to books, DVDs, audiobooks, music CDs, and magazines to check out. Materials are available for all ages and interests, and many titles are available in large print. Digital materials are also available for patrons to borrow.

The Butler County Public Library Taxing District Board of Trustees meets regularly on the third Tuesday of each month at 4:00 p.m. in the community room at the library.

Get a Library Card

How do I get a card?

You are eligible for a FREE library card, if you:

  • are a resident of Butler County
  • are employed in Butler County
  • own property in Butler County
  • are a student in Butler County

Library cards are non-transferable. Family and/or corporate cards are not available.

What do I have to bring to get a card?

Picture identification such as a driver’s license, Military ID or Passport. If proper photo ID does not have current Butler County mailing address, one of the following items showing proof of residency is also required:

  • Utility bill
  • Phone bill
  • Property deed and or lease
  • Property tax bill

Cardholders must be able to write their first and last name to sign up for a library card. The parent or legal guardian assumes all liability for applicants ages 17 and under. Patron will receive one card at sign-up at no charge. If initial card is lost or stolen patron must pay $1.00 for each replacement card.

It is the responsibility of the cardholder to inform the library of any change of information (i.e.: address, phone number). Failure to notify the library of these changes DOES NOT relieve patron of any overdue fines. Parents/Guardians are responsible for all items checked out by juvenile patrons. Any items that are checked out on a card that was not reported to the library as lost/stolen are the responsibility of the card holder.

As a courtesy to our patrons the library allows everyone 1 checkout without their card per year. If the patron does not have their card after this courtesy checkout they will be required to purchase a new card for $1.00.

Checkout of any item in the library, including computer use, is free of charge. However, items that are not returned on their designated due dates are subject to overdue fees.


Overdue Fees

Patrons with fines totaling $5.00 or more, and/or having any overdue materials on their account will lose all library privileges (including computers) until the account is reconciled.

Patrons with fines totaling $4.99 or less will be given 30 days from the date the fine(s) was (were) assessed to reconcile their account. If the account is not reconciled within 30 days the patron will lose all library privileges (including computers) until the balance is paid in full.
